Introducing Sketchy Saturday over at Paper Issues

It's Saturday and the sun is shining in beautiful Rolesville, North Carolina. We just returned from a pretty great soccer game and I am now getting ready to play with pretty paper. Life doesn't get much better than this.

I don't know about you, but I love a great sketch challenge. Guess what? That is exactly what I am sharing with you today.

We just started a new feature over at Paper Issues. The first Saturday of every month we will host "Sketchy Saturday" and we will have a sketch challenge. The winner is randomly selected from all those who link up a project to receive a $10 gift card to the Paper Issues store. *When you checkout you can also use my code and get an extra 20% off your entire order. Just use code "TONI" at checkout. What'a not to love about a free $10 and 20% off? Nothing. Nothing at all.

Here is the sketch you get to work with. It was created by my fellow Creative Team Member Jennifer Chapin.

Here is what I came up with for my take on the sketch. Believe it or not I made a 2-page layout and I really like how it turned out! I used a letter written by my daughter for the second page. To make the letter archival safe I made a copy and printed it onto some white American Crafts cardstock.

Please head over to the Paper Issues blog and check out how my other Creative Team members (Jennifer Chapin, Shannon Morgan, and Dona Howe interpreted this sketch.) You may enter the contest through Friday, October 10th. A winner will be selected for the $10 Paper Issues gift card and announced via the blog on Saturday, October 11th.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. I will be back next week with some brand new flair designs for my store, two different Project Life posts, a card share, and some layouts too. It's gonna be a  good week over at Toni From Designs. A really good week.

Creating a Hybrid Layout Using Leftover Bits and Pieces

Happy Thursday! I am back today with an idea for creating a fun hybrid layout, using your favorite digital template and bits of patterned paper. I hope you stay around, grab a cup of Joe, and enjoy. :-)
  •  If you don't have this template you could also just print a large photo sized approximately 8.5 x 5 inches, then cut a smaller photo into a heart shape approximately 3 inches across. (See photo below.) I colored the bottom part in aqua so that it was easier to see.

  • Now that your photos are printed and ready to go, it's time to get out some of your favorite patterned papers. I used some grid paper from my stash and assorted patterned papers from the Studio Calico Hello Hello Scrapbook Kit, but you could use any patterned papers that you like. Cut down all of your patterned papers to approximately 1 inch wide, (I did not measure this, but eyeballed it instead.)
  • Glue down all of your patterned papers down once you find an arrangement you like
  • If you like to journal, I recommend having one of the patterns be very plain ( I used a grid piece.) Add your journaling.
  • Now it's time to gather your favorite embellishments. The super fun part. :-)  I used watercolor hearts, puffy gold heart stickers, sequins, gems, a transparent letter, wood veneer hearts, w round piece of wood, an October Afternoon date stamp, and my trusted tiny attacher.
  • Place your embellishments in a diagonal fashion across the page.

I hope you liked this tutorial and that it gives you some new ideas for your scrapbook pages. I will be back soon with another hybrid layout to share. Until then....

Happy Scrappin'

Layout Share: My Daisy Girl

Hello and Happy Wednesday. Thanks for popping in today, I have a layout to share with you based on some pretty incredible color inspiration I shared on Instagram a few weeks ago. The top photo below are stacks of fabrics at Joanne Fabrics. I just adore this combination of peach, red, radiant orchid, and pops of green, and the florals just scream spring. Please keep reading to find out how I used this Instagram photo to make a fun and spring-feeling layout.

After taking the photo, I used this photo as my guide when choosing the products below. I pulled out all kinds of things (probably 2-3 times more than I needed, ) but it is so much easier to create when it is all pulled together before hand. It was also super fun to take a photo of my procured supplies and just think about my project for a few days until I decided which way I wanted to go with it. If you have never tried gathering all of your supplies beforehand, I highly recommend it. It can also be highly inspirational just finding a fun way to photograph your supplies together. If you give it a try, I would love it if you link me to your combination. :-)
Next I made a collage out of a variety of photos of my beloved dog Daisy. I then followed a sketch posted at Studio Calico earlier this week, and 90 minutes later this is what I had.

Thank you so much for stopping by life, scrapbook, repeat today. I appreciate you being here. I also appreciate all of my new readers, followers, and commenters, along with my longtime followers. Thanks so much everyone!

This layout started with some layers of papers, a few tags, and then I just had fun embellishing, misting, stamping, and sewing buttons. Who doesn't love buttons? Seriously. I will never grow tired of them. I am also loving these floral rub-ons, and all of the great rub-ons available as of late. I sure missed those guys. Anyone else remember those awesome Heidi Swapp alphabet rub-ons from yesteryear? I sure miss them. I ran out about two years ago. Those were so much fun!

I linked this layout over at Paper Issues. Their latest issue is "Tip-toe Through the Tulips," and I interpreted this challenge by using lots of spring and floral elements. I always love their challenges. Thanks for another great one Cassie Box and Paper Issues.

I will be back tomorrow with another installment of Crafty Organization Thursday and this time we are looking at different ways to store all of our small paper pads. I sure hope to see you back. Until next time...

Happy Scrappin'

Layout Share: Chubs & Wheels

Happy Monday! Today I have a layout to share with you using a couple of mixed media techniques. I hope you like it and find this helpful.

Here is the design process for this layout:

  1. It started with a photo of my daughter's two new hamsters. She has been wanting them for almost a year and finally purchased them in October as a birthday present. It was time to finally make a page about them, and I finally got a decent photo without them moving all over the place. Robo Dwarf Hamsters are seriously fast! The photo was printed at home using Photoshop Elements for editing and an older Epson standard-sized printer. Photo was printed to be 3 by 4 inches.
  2. I then decided on a color scheme that would go with my picture. Since the picture is fairly neutral, I based it on the gorgeous sheet of ampersand paper designed by the incredible Shanna Noel for Studio Calico. It is one of my most favorite papers ever! The paper is white with tan, pink, and orange accents. I picked all of my supplies in colors that would compliment this paper.
  3. I started with a plain piece of American Crafts white cardstock and trimmed it down to 8.5 inches by 11 inches.
  4. I then trimmed a piece of the ampersand paper down to 3 inches by 11 inches and adhered it to the right side of the page using adhesive.
  5. I paired these two background papers with a piece of white floral paper designed by Studio Calico, a piece of pink paper from the American Crafts Everyday 6 x 6 inch paper pad sold at Target, and I also used a piece of black cardstock from my stash. All three of these papers were trimmed down to approximately 3 inches by 4 inches.
  6. I placed the above 3 layering paper behind my photo. When adding layers to a scrapbook page, I move the elements around a bit until I find an arrangement that I like. It is best to start with smaller angles and just slowly moved them around until you like what you see. I then stapled the three pattern papers together onto the white card stock. The photo was then affixed on top of the layered papers using pop dots. Using staples instead of glue for attaching my layers really saves glue and holds the papers together nicely I have found. I got this tip from the incredibly talented Lilith Eeckles and I just love using my stapler now!
  7. I then added mist to my layout, but I first used a small scrap piece of paper to cover my picture (I didn't want any mist on my photo.) I used Heidi Swapp Color Shine in Black Velevet for this layout and just used the mist applicator that comes in the bottle. I do not spray the mist however, but shake tiny drops of black ink onto the layout going from the top left corner to the bottom right corner in a diagonal line. I also add a few random drops to the middle because it looked plain.
  8. Next I took out my Two Peas wood veneer card and stained it using Tim Holtz distress ink in walnut stain. I let it dry for a few minutes, and then got impatient, and dried it with my embossing gun. I then adhered this veneer piece to the layout using glue dots.
  9. I added the Simple Stories letter stickers on top of the veneer card.
  10. I pulled together my embellishments next, some labels and printables purchased at Studio Calico during the month of October (the black labels designed by Hello Forever and the circle and heart printable.) I also pulled out the Pebbles chalkboard words.
  11. I filled in my journaling onto the labels and began putting the labels, printables, and stickers down. I just shuffle and tuck them around here and there until I like the arrangement, and then I glue everything down.
  12. Next I added a Two Peas in a Bucket orange arrow paper clip to the photo. I thought that corner needed a little pop, and it also helps to draw your eye to the photo with such a busy paper behind it. When it doubt use an arrow, I do this often, and it usually works.
  13. The last step for me is always finishing touches. I decided the layout needed a little something else, so I used the gold star rub-ons from the Studio Calico printshop collection. I just sprinkled them about until I had an arrangement that I liked. I stop a lot and look at the layout, add a star or two, look some more, stop, decide it's done, and then I walk away.
I hope this step-by-step layout instructions are easy to understand. I wish I had thought to take photos during the process, but I am hoping this will still be helpful for those of you interested in dabbling in a little mixed media

Thank you for stopping by today, I appreciate you being here. I will be back tomorrow with some Project Life pages. What kinds of things are you scrapbooking lately? Anyone else adding any new pets to the mix? What about mixed media? Are you trying any new techniques that you love? I would love to hear about it. Until next time...

Layout Share: Cone of Shame

Today I have a layout to share with you. It is all about my poor old girl Daisy (our rescue lab.) she ended up with an eye infection and had to get the dreaded "Cone of Shame." I could not help but document it, I think she looked kinda cute!

Products Used:
  • American Crafts Amy Tangerine Cut and Paste papers
  • Studio Calico Marks and Company Scrapbook Kit (yellow stars)
  • Jillibean Soup Alphabeans
  • Amy Tangerine Cut & Paste Remarks Sticker Book
  • Mists: Heidi Swapp mustard, Mister Huey in White, Inky Black, and Bonny Blue
  • Sequins
Let's talk unusual scrapbooking layout topics today...anyone else scrapbook something out-of-the-ordinary lately? I think this photo qualifies as slightly-unusual. I cannot help it, this photo just makes me laugh, and since she wasn't experiencing very much pain, I don't feel so bad. Anyone else find their pets hysterical???

Speaking of hysterical pets. While documenting Week in the Life yesterday, I took this photo of my other dog (Elizabeth.) I am trying to come up with the perfect caption for this....any ideas? I promise it will make you laugh.

My 3 Girls

This layout was inspired by a sketch over at Paper Bakery for NSD. You can find the sketch HERE. For my take on the Paper Bakery sketch, I chose to use one photo instead of three, and I added extra layers around both sides to stretch it out. Instead of horizontal elements in the upper right corner, I misted a diagonal pattern using sequins and Mister Huey mist in Navy and Heidi Swapp Color Shine in Mustard.  I created this layout using the new Studio Calico Planetarium Scrapbook and Project Life Kit as well as the Atlantic sequins. Yum. Who does not love sequins? I mean seriously? What's not to love?  Seriously. Sequins? Yes please!

And now, onto the layout:

I just realized it is now official Sunday, May 12th (at least on the East Coast.) Here I thought it was barely 11pm, time flies when you are busy blogging I guess. Happy Mother's Day to all of you Mother's out there. I appreciate you. I appreciate your work and dedication to mothering. This includes all of you mom's to fur children as well. They are part of the family after all, and like my layout says, I have 3 girls, and not just one in my house. :-)

My mom is almost 3,000 miles away but we will be talking tomorrow, but I am giving her a shout out anyways.

Mom, thank you for teaching me daily by example how to be a good mother. I am so lucky to have you in my life, and my children are so very fortunate to have a grandmother that is truly the greatest woman in the entire world. Your devotion to family and friends, tireless effort in your community, belief in God, and ability to be patient and see the good in most any situation is truly inspiration. I love you!

Here is my beautiful mother with three of the grandkids

As you can tell from this picture my two kids and nephew
are kind of obsessed with my mom and her I-pad

I wish you all a very Happy Sunday and Happy Scrappin'

A new layout using the Paper Bakery Lemonade Stand Scrapbook Kit

I just began a kit subscription at Paper Bakery earlier this month and am really liking it. The owner Sarah Hill is a real sweetheart and fellow dog enthusiast and shipping is prompt ( I always love that.)  She also has a wide assortment of really cool flair badges if you are in the market for those as well. I really enjoyed the assortment of goodies in the April Scrapbooking Kit. This is the second layout I have made so far with the kit Lemonade Stand.

"A Dog Story in Spring" was created using their Sketch Challenge #2  for the month

Thanks for stopping by, I hope to see you back tomorrow with part 3 of Glitter Girl's Layouts Within Limits Challenge.

Until then, happy scrappin'

I just love my dog Daisy. She is my furry child and such a sweetheart. We have had her for over 8 years and rescued her from the Humane Society. It was her last day there and I put a deposit on her and hoped my hubby wouldn't be too mad. He got over it and I got my very best friend.

This layout was inspired by the ombre trend and my love for pops of color, and of course my trusty companion: Daisy.

And some close-ups:

Seriously, isn't she just the cutest thing ever? This layout was so much fun to make. I used all of my favorites-Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm, mist, banners, glitter, ribbon, twine, hand stitching and clumps of embellishments. I think this is probably most true to my scrap style. Anyone else find it difficult to pinpoint what your style is, especially if your like me and love to try new things. I guess this is mine if I had to pick one.

Products Used:

  • Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm Wishbone paper (from Studio Calico Neverland Scrapbook Kit)
  • Studio Calico wood veneer banners and cameras
  • My Mind's Eye enamel dots
  • Ribbon from my stash with blue stripes
  • White shipping tag
  • Studio Calico exclusive striped paper (from March's Neverland Scrapbook Kit)
  • Blue Baker's Twine-My Mind's Eye from last year
  • Amy Tangerine Yes, Please Hopeful paper
  • American Crafts glitter tape in white and cherry

  • American Crafts white paper-that was painted with Mister Huey
  • small paintbrush
  • Mister Huey in Boss Lady, Sherbet, and Buttercup, they were carefully applies over one anotehr for the ombre look onto white paper. I let it dry, then hand cut banners, and hand stitched them down.
What have you been creating lately? Anyone else sooooo excited about National Scrapbook Week? What are y'all planning on doing on National Scrapbook Day?

Until next time, Happy Scrappin'

Layout Share: Biggest Dog Girl There Is

My daughter Isabelle absolutely adores animals, especially dogs. Our family is blessed to have two fabulous canine companions: Daisy ( a nine year old rescue lab mix) and Elizabeth ( a 5 year old Pekingese.) These dogs could not be any more loved. The little one sleeps with my daughter every night and they both walk her to and from the bus everyday. It is very mutual adoration on both parties. this is not the first layout I have made of my little one with the dogs, I think it might be my fourth actually, but it is so her, and this one is my favorite.

Supplies Used:
  • Studio Calico Block Party Scrapbook Kit
  • Green embroidery floss and needle
  • White shipping tag
  • American Crafts adhesive
  • Black American Crafts precision pen .01
  • American Crafts foam dots
  • Versamark ink in Onyx Black
What have you been creating lately? Anyone else experimenting with circles? Anyone else starting to think about making Valentine's Day cards? I have seen so many great ones lately, I have no idea what I will do. Probably something simple with doilies, hearts, and pretty paper, but you never know with me. I could end up with black cards-well, probably not that, but you get the idea. Have a great weekend! Happy Scrappin.'

Little Moments (like this one) are Magic

As a parent, time just seems to fly by. Everyday faster and faster. Somedays it seems like those special moments just went by way too fast, but other times you see a moment and are able to fully capture it. That is always so exciting. I have come to discover that taking pictures of older children as they sleep is so magical. I was able to capture this picture of my two littles, along with our two furry family members last week and I just stood there and watched them for awhile and then I realized I had better hurry up, quit gawking, and get a picture before everyone woke up! Luckily, My trusty I-phone was nearby and the dogs opened their eyes but did not wake up the kids (thank you Daisy and Elizabeth.)

(A little backstory) lately, my two (ages 12 and 9) have been having a very hard time getting along, but this weekend they were the best of buddies and slept with the dogs together all weekend long. They are so innocent about this, but I know soon the time will come when they will not be able to do this anymore, but until then I will just capture those photos.

Without further ado, here it is:

A close up of the photo and tons of papers and embellishments

And a close up of the upper left corner embellishment cluster and title work

  • This layout was created using the Studio Calico monthly kit-Sock Hop as well as the two add-on kits for November (Penny Loafers and Bobby Socks.)
  • Studio Calico Mister Huey in Warm Calico.
  • American Crafts precision pen .03 point in black ink.
  • Prima Chalk Fluid Edger in Old Road (for stamped sentiment "Hello, Friend."

  • Oh how I just love those two, I am so blessed with two great kids, they are such sweethearts. So now for some questions for you reader, have you been able to document any super special moments? You know, those moments that pull at your heart strings, moments you know you will want to remember forever? I would love to hear about your special moments, or send me a link and I will see how you documented it.

Thank you for stopping by my blog today, I appreciate you being here. :-)

    Happy Thursday!

    Layout Share: "Doggy Chillaxin"

It has been so long since I have shared a traditional scrapbook layout with you. Why, you might ask? I have been super busy packing up our townhome to move to our new house. We are under contract to close on the house by December 7th, but we are trying to close much earlier (November 30th.) Nothing like eating Thanksgiving off paper plates, and moving during the holidays. Not really complaining, this is a tremendous blessing to my family, but things are a little hectic.

I took Sunday off this past weekend and then it-kind-of-rolled into Monday, LOL. I was successful in getting some house cleaning done and lots of laundry (seriously do not ask me about it, so embarassing,)  but not much packing. I just needed some creative "me" time. Anyways, I have four layouts to share this week and without further ado, here it is:

And a close up for you:

I should give you some back story on this photo. This is our pekingese Elizabeth, a dog, that has a  lot of personality, and is constantly cracking us up, and  yes she does sleep, relax, and walk around the house, half of the time with her tongue out of her mouth. On this particular day I was watching the news on the couch and she fell asleep next to me, just like this. She doesn't usually sleep on her back, but this pose just cracked me up and I had to scrapbook it. The life of a dog? Rough isn't it.

This layout (along with the rest I am sharing this week) was created using the November Studio Calico Scrapbook Kit entitled Sock Hop. Studio Calico is a great kit club if you are looking for some scrapbook inspiration or a great online community of some seriously awesome and talented scrapbooking pals.

Thank you for coming to my blog today. I will have more layouts to share the rest of this week as well, so I would love to see you again.

    Happy Tuesday!

    Furry Family Friday

Just an adorable picture to share today to start your weekend with a smile.

Have a great weekend, I will be back next week with a Studio Calico Central High kit layout to share, a Jillibean Soup card, three Project Life weekly spreads, some fall decorating, and with some luck my finished Summer 2012 mini.

Isabelle and Elizabeth (asleep again, lazy, lazy dog)

What are you working on? Planning ahead? Anything fun to share for fall?

    Happy Friday!

"It's Okay, I've Got You Baby"

Spending 5 hours on a single-page scrapbook layout is not something I can manage for everything I scrap, but regardless I am glad that I spent that much time on this particular layout. I just love this photo...it so encompasses my daughter right now, it is so her...holding Elizabeth, super tan, wavy and semi-disheveled hair, scars on her arms from picking bug bites. It is a definite glimpse into who Isabelle is right now, isn't that what we all love about scrapbooking? Once in awhile a photo just captures the moment, that period of time so perfectly, and we are dying to scrapbook it and tell that particular story, that is how this photo was for me.

Back story of the photograph-our dog Elizabeth was going to the vet today and was very nervous waiting for the doctor to walk into our examination room. Isabelle (my dog loving little girl, ) quickly swooped her up, holding her like a baby on her shoulder and rocked and patted her saying, "It's Okay I've Got You Baby," over and over again. This was a moment that had to be captured, I quickly grabbed my I-Pod 4S and took some photos. Isabelle is such a little mama and I am so thankful that I photographed and scrapbooked this moment that I want to remember forever.

How I Made My Embellishments Coordinate with my Photograph

One challenge I had with this layout, was finding items that matched the purple in her dress, it is not a color that I found easily in my scrapbooking supply stash or at my local scrapbook store....I remedied that with watercolor. Seriously, if you have never tried it, you have not lived!!! Watercolors are inexpensive, terribly addicting, and an incredibly fun way to color in scrapbook paper and what not. You can use watercolors to add extra color to anything scrapbook related, or also (like I did) to color embellishments/ or paper to coordinate with your photograph, or more specifically my daughter's very colorful dress that takes up a lot of the picture. For example, the cameras in my layout from the Amy Tangerine Sketchbook Line by American Crafts that are purple, aqua, and yellow/green-yup watercolor, Amy Tan did not make the cameras that way, they were just outlined in black, but what a great base. I also colored the SC wood veneer cameras and tweets. The cameras were colored using purple watercolor and I used aqua for the tweets. I also used a cardboard high heel found in the October Afternoon Miscellany pack for an embellishment on this layout. . . this was embossed using Zing embossing powder in Opaque Aqua.

Different Strategies to Make Your Embellishments Coordinate with your Layout
    1. Use watercolor. A basic set of watercolor can be purchased for right around $5 at your local craft store.
    2. Use American Crafts Zing Embossing Power, or any other embossing powder that you have. These can be purchased in the $6 price range and are great to find in an unusual color that you use a lot of, or just happen to really like.
    3. Acrylic paint is another way to alter a layout to match-you can color embellishments, use it to stamp with, you name it. Acrylic paint is very affordable as well, and can be purchased for right around $1 at your local craft store. You can often find them for 2 / $1 with sales as well.
    4. Mist or drip excess paint or mist onto a layout...I love to use either acrylic paint or Studio Calico Mister Huey.
    5. Stamping-you can use colored ink or black, you can emboss, you can use Versamark, the possibilities are endless.

What about making things coordinate on your page, what do you do to make accessories and paper match the harder to use pictures or other scrapbook items? I would love to hear your thoughts.

    Happy Monday!
